Scaffolding across Surrey: what we do here

Surrey work reaches us mostly through recommendation — builders, roofers and homeowners who have used us further south and want the same crew on a job north of the Downs. We travel for it because Surrey properties tend to suit the way we work: surveyed properly, planned before the wagon is loaded, and built without churning up a garden.

The county's housing stock is dominated by large detached and semi-detached homes on generous but awkward plots — mature planting, gravel drives, level changes, conservatories, garden rooms and boundary walls that all sit exactly where the scaffold wants to go. Those obstacles are the main reason a Surrey scaffold takes more planning than an equivalent house on the coastal plain.

There is also a lot of period and heritage fabric across Surrey, from Victorian and Edwardian villas to older cottages and converted farm buildings, and a significant volume of high-specification renovation: full re-roofs, loft conversions, wraparound extensions, rendering and complete external refurbishments.

On every Surrey job we agree the footprint before we start — where standards land, what gets protected, how materials come in, and how the household keeps using its own front door while the scaffold is up.

How quickly we get to Surrey

  • Surrey is further from the Eastergate yard than our Sussex and Hampshire patch, so we plan the build, adaptations and dismantle dates in advance rather than working day to day.
  • Site visits are arranged by appointment, and we will confirm dates in writing with the quote.
  • For urgent or make-safe work in Surrey, call 07738 062043 and Billy will tell you honestly what we can get to and when.

Surrey property we work on

Large detached family homes

Deep plots with mature planting, gravel or block-paved drives and outbuildings, where the scaffold footprint has to be agreed before a single standard goes down.

Victorian and Edwardian villas

Tall elevations, bay windows, decorative brickwork and multiple chimney stacks — all of which affect tie positions and the number of lifts.

Rural cottages and conversions

Older, softer fabric on uneven ground, often with restricted vehicle access down a lane or shared track.

Commercial and retail premises

High-street frontages, offices and units where public access, signage and trading hours dictate how and when the scaffold goes up.

What Surrey customers usually need scaffolding for

  • Full re-roofs and roof replacements
  • Loft conversions and dormer construction
  • Wraparound and two-storey extensions
  • Rendering and full external refurbishment
  • Chimney rebuilds and repointing
  • Temporary roofs for major roof works
  • Birdcage access for tall internal spaces
  • Edge protection for flat-roof and terrace works

Why us

Why Surrey clients use Square Scaffolding

Surrey homeowners are usually spending serious money on the building the scaffold is attached to, so the standard that matters is care: protecting the ground, the planting, the paving and the neighbour's boundary, and taking the structure down cleanly the day it is no longer needed.

That is what our reviews describe — respectful of the property and the neighbours, quick to strike once the work finishes, competitive on price. Behind it sit CISRS-carded operatives, a Gold Scaffolding Supervisor card, Scaffolding Association membership and £10,000,000 of public liability cover.

Planned, not improvised

Distance means we plan Surrey jobs properly in advance — dates, adaptations and dismantle all agreed up front.

Scaffolding challenges specific to Surrey

Tight plots with immovable obstacles

The classic Surrey problem is not height, it is obstruction. Conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms, retaining walls, oil tanks, heat pumps and mature trees sit directly under the elevations that need access.

Bridging over a conservatory or cantilevering past an obstruction is standard work, but it has to be designed on the site visit and priced honestly — not discovered on the morning of the build and charged as an extra.

  • Bridged and cantilevered lifts over conservatories and extensions
  • Protection for lawns, planting and block paving
  • Footprints agreed with the client before erection

Clay soils and seasonal ground movement

Large parts of Surrey sit on clay, which shrinks in a dry summer and swells in a wet winter. That is behind a good share of the county's structural repair work — cracked masonry, movement around bays, and chimney stacks pulling away from the roofline.

For the scaffold itself, clay and lawn founding means proper sole boards and periodic checks through the hire rather than assuming the ground you set up on in June is the ground you have in October.

Neighbours, boundaries and shared access

Surrey plots are large but boundaries are still tight, and an oversail or a tie over a boundary line can create a dispute that outlasts the building work.

We identify boundary issues at survey stage, discuss anything that affects a neighbour before we build, and keep the working footprint inside what has been agreed.

Long, complex renovation programmes

A full Surrey refurbishment can involve roofers, renderers, window fitters, decorators and solar installers over several months, each wanting the scaffold configured slightly differently.

We plan those adaptations into the job from the start and extend the hire when it is needed, so the programme is not held up waiting for a scaffolder to become available.

Scaffolding in Surrey: frequently asked questions

Do you serve Surrey?

Yes. We are based at Eastergate in West Sussex and take on domestic and commercial scaffolding across Surrey, usually planned in advance so dates are firm.

How fast can you get to Surrey?

Surrey is further from our yard than our Sussex and Hampshire patch, so we book Surrey work in rather than fitting it in day to day. Call 07738 062043 and Billy will give you honest dates.

What does scaffolding cost in Surrey?

It depends on the number of lifts, the length of the elevations, any bridging over conservatories or extensions, ground conditions and hire length. The site visit and written quote are free.

Can you scaffold over a conservatory or extension?

Yes — bridged and cantilevered lifts over conservatories, orangeries and single-storey extensions are routine work. We design it on the site visit and include it in the written price.

Will the scaffold damage my drive or lawn?

We use sole boards and spread the load, and protect paving and planting where needed. Care on high-value property is one of the things our customers consistently mention in reviews.

Do you offer emergency scaffolding in Surrey?

We take on emergency and make-safe work. Ring with the postcode and what has happened and Billy will tell you straight away whether we can reach you in the timescale you need.

How long is the standard hire in Surrey?

Six weeks unless agreed otherwise. Large Surrey renovations often run longer, so extensions are arranged as needed.

Are you insured for work in Surrey?

Yes — £10,000,000 public liability cover, with certificates available on request. All operatives hold in-date CISRS cards.

Do you work with architects and main contractors?

Yes. Where a project has a programme, we plan erection, adaptations between trades and dismantle around it and issue RAMS on request.

Can you handle listed or period properties?

Yes. Tie positions, protection and loading are planned around what older fabric can take, and every property is surveyed before we price.
